How are Trestle Masks Made?
Rules for wearing a mask
All trestle masks are individually hand-made at the trestle Arts Base. As seen in the video on the left, the masks are made of a sheet of plastic, the shape of the mask is made using a ready made shape. Using a vacuum former the plastic sheet is heated and then the shaped mask is lifted into the plastic to create the mask. Paint is then manually added to outline the eyebrows and mouth of the mask. After a drill is used to make 2 small holes for the eyes.
-
Never speak through a full mask If one speaks through a full mask their speech would be muffled and it would be hard to understand what they are saying.
-
Leave the mask on the floor Someone may step on or kick the mask which could lead to damages
-
Face the audience at all times If one does not face the audience with their masks on they are breaking the illusion as, the audience will not see the expression on the mask.
-
Clean the mask before & after use To avoid germs and viruses spreading
-
Wear the mask on your head like a hat Doing so may break the illusion and ruin the mask.
-
Turn your head away from the audience when taking & putting on the mask Doing so avoids the break of the illusion

The mask helps to reveal the precise characteristic of the character and their expressions. It is ideal for a mask performances and it incorporates a strong character type. A Vamos Theatre full mask show is wordless, telling its story through physical communication, supported by visuals and soundtracks. masks are also used as a form of disguise or concealment to hide the identity of a person and by its own features to establish another being. This essential characteristic of hiding and revealing personalities or moods is common to all masks.
Actors in mask use their entire bodies in dramatic ways to embody a character. The masks are also used for a comedic aspect of the performance, as the expressions and parts on the mask are exaggerated.
